Hello Readers, Hope you’re well.
A really quick post this time (I know I say that a lot).
Microsoft released an update for the Skype for Business 2016 client that gives the Teams client additional status options that were previously only available in the Skype for Business client.
Summary
This update includes the following interoperability improvements between Microsoft Skype for Business 2016 and Teams:
- The Skype for Business 2016 client presence status is updated according to the Teams client status when the Teams client is in a meeting or screen sharing. When a user joins a meeting by using Teams, the user’s status in Skype for Business 2016 is changed to “In a conference call.” When the user shares the screen by using Teams, the user’s status in Skype for Business 2016 is changed to “Presenting” if Show me as Do Not Disturb when I share my desktop is selected in the Skype for Business 2016 options dialog box.Note To enable this update, you have to create a Group Policy Object (GPO) to add a new DWORD registry key EnableStatusSyncInInterop, and set the value to 1 in the following path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Lync
- The Skype for Business 2016 client places the current conference on “Hold” if the Teams client makes or receives a call while Skype for Business 2016 is in a conference.
How to get this update
To get this update, install the June 4, 2019, update (KB4464576) for Microsoft Skype for Business 2016.
The update is only seems to be pertinent to the MSI client, version 16.0.4861.1001
If you’re running Skype and Teams side by side and using the MSI client, you can enable this feature for yourselves by installing the update yourselves and then adding the registry key to enable it.
Open an elevated command prompt and run the following
REG ADD HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Lync /v EnableStatusSyncInInterop /d 1

I don’t know if there will be another update for the C2R client from Office 365. What I can say is that I use the Skype client in Meeting mode. That is to say that I’m a TeamsOnly user which means that my Skype client runs in the background in the System Tray. And only pops up when I join Skype meetings. So my Skype client already shows my Presenting and In a call when I am, in fact, in a Teams call or sharing.
This update is probably more aimed at users that are using Skype and Teams side by side in Islands mode. Or perhaps one of the other coexistence modes.
If anyone has any more info, it would be great if you can comment.
Thanks
That’s all Folks!
Hey there! Has anyone already tried this successfully? I’m wondering that a web search for the term “EnableStatusSyncInInterop” does not deliver tons of results. Is it the correct key and the correct path inside the registry? Because there also exist the paths “Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Lync” and “Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Lync”. (And by the way: The above ADD REG Command does not create a “REG_DWORD” value, but a “REG_SZ” value on my machine)
Our environment: Skype for Business OnPrem (16.0.11601.20174) used for classic telephony with customers and MS Teams from Office 365 E3 Plan (unfortunately no external telephony – only Teams to Teams)

I have the same issue Teams + Skype on prem and I cannot make this work, unless this is for people that use Skype and Teams in the cloud

Hi, I modified the line on command prompt to the below to change it to DWORD. I still don’t see the change in status on skype/teams.
Is this working for anyone?

I just got the reason from our internal IT department: The problem is that we are using different accounts for teams and sfb. Otherwise it should work they said.

OK in response to all your questions.
Like most of us IT people, we sometimes forget to include things . If it should be a DWORD key then he left out….. /t REG_DWORD
Your other question about which key is correct. You could use either the GPO key he posted or you can use the User normal key. I fixed the entries for DWORD and pasted them below. The end users I was working on have all gone home. I have to test it tomorrow.
–> Group Policy Not changable by end user
REG ADD HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Lync /v EnableStatusSyncInInterop /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
–> EnableStatusSyncInInterop
REG ADD HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Lync” /v EnableStatusSyncInInterop /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
You Rarely use this to add Registry Keys so I don’t think this one would be correct
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\Lync”

Did this work for you?

Missing quote. The correct syntax is:
REG ADD “HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Lync” /v EnableStatusSyncInInterop /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

But the sync doesn’t work for me 😦

Either works here. We have also the configuration Skype 16 onPrem and MS Teams out of E3 M365 License.
